Portuguese defender Francisco Reis Ferreira, better known as Ferro, has moved to Croatian club Hajduk Split on loan from Benfica.

Hajduk Split and Benfica agreed loan terms for the 24-year-old until the end of the current season with the option to extend for another season.

Ferro started his football career at Benfica and has played over 100 matches for the club and was a regular member of all Portuguese national team in youth categories. Early last year he went on loan to Valencia where he spent half the season.

“I watched videos online, found out about the club and in the end it wasn’t hard to choose. It is a big club with great ambitions, it is fighting for the championship and the cup, which is very important to me, and then I saw the fans – and that was the key reason why I chose Hajduk,” said Ferro on Monday in Split.

“A player who is a product of the Benfica Academy is coming to us on loan, he was a member of the Portuguese national team through all the younger age categories, and he should bring more quality to our team, primarily due to exceptional football skills, but also the experience of playing at the highest level of football. We have been negotiating with Benfica and the player for a long time, we felt great passion, motivation and desire to progress and return to the previous level of quality that he showed as one of the greatest Portuguese talents. He chose Hajduk and our project despite other financially generous offers and showed that he is a modest and characterful person who puts football development in the environment of our club in the first place,” said Hajduk Split’s sports director Mindaugas Nikoličius.

Ferro was presented to the fans in a unique video on their social media channels. In a couple hours the video gathered over 6,300 likes and has been shared over 540 times.
