BUENOS AIRES, April 20 (Xinhua) — A superb second-half goal from Colombia international winger Diego Valoyes fired Talleres Cordoba to a 1-0 home win over River Plate in Argentina’s Primera Division on Wednesday.
After a first half of few scoring opportunities, Valoyes broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute in a move that started with a Federico Girotti cross that was headed toward the edge of the six-yard box by Gaston Benavidez.
Valoyes then flung himself horizontally to strike the ball in mid-air with the outside of his right foot, wrong-footing goalkeeper Franco Armani, who was helpless as the ball rolled into the bottom left corner.
The result leaves River Plate second in the 14-team Group B standings, five points behind leaders Racing Club. Talleres are 11th, 14 points further back.
In other Argentine Primera Division fixtures on Wednesday, Newell’s Old Boys won 1-0 at home to Banfield, Racing Club secured a 3-2 victory at Patronato, Central Cordoba prevailed 2-1 at Velez Sarsfield, Lanus won 3-1 at home to Rosario Central and Boca Juniors were held to a 1-1 home draw by Godoy Cruz.
