Chelsea assistant manager Zsolt Low has admitted that keeping Thomas Tuchel’s stars motivated for a Premier League title challenge is proving tough.
The Blues enjoyed a remarkable second half of last season, resulting in Champions League triumph. While they had not slipped too far off the pace under Frank Lampard, Roman Abramovich pulled the plug.
What followed from the Chelsea owner’s decision to sack Lampard and bring in Tuchel proved massively unexpected.
The Blues went all the way to the Champions League final, clinching their second win in the competition.
However, boss Tuchel now has his sights set on Chelsea’s first Premier League title since 2017. And he has re-employed the services of star striker Romelu Lukaku to help them get over the line.
According to Low, though, maintaining such high standards at Chelsea is not proving an easy task.
“It’s important to keep Chelsea at that level and improve,” the Hungarian told Digi Sport (via Origo).
“The summer transfer window has been very good, we have been able to get players that we desperately needed and we can move forward with them.
“After the Champions League win, it is very difficult and challenging for our players to stay motivated, but we are constantly working on this.”
Chelsea currently sit top of the Premier League table after eight games, a point above Liverpool.
A solid defence has proved a key part of Tuchel’s success and Saturday’s win over Brentford was no different. The hosts had a flurry of chances, but Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy made several saves.
Despite their solid defence, Lukaku is struggling for goals up front. In fact, he is in a goal drought following his impressive start to life at Chelsea.
Lukaku handed Chelsea criticism
Tuchel has had to defend the Belgium international from criticism of late.
Former Inter manager Antonio Conte, who got the best out of Lukaku last season, has had his say.
Tuchel hit back, claiming that the striker offers much more than just finding the back of the net. The manager in fact pointed to his impact in the 3-0 win over Tottenham.
Now, former West Ham star Paolo Di Canio has added his own criticism of Lukaku.
