Three players Manchester United missed out on in the transfer window | Shoot

If the transfer window was to be won on the acquisition of landmark names and excitement, Manchester United can proudly claim to have carried out the best business this window.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s spectacular return completed an incredible window which saw Jadon Sancho sign for £73m and Raphael Varane for £43m.

United’s priorities was to find the perfect central defensive partner for Harry Maguire, as well as a new right-winger to take the Premier League by storm – they found all of those and added Ronaldo to the mix.

But, targets did change for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and there were areas they were not able to strengthen – Shoot takes a look at three players who got away from United.

Kieran Trippier

Trippier was not able to secure a move away from Atletico.

The England defender had been subject to intense speculation connecting him with a potential move to Old Trafford.

While interest did die down, The Athletic reported United reignited their interest in the Atletico Madrid defender just before the end of the window.

Unfortunately for the Red Devils, United and Atletico could not agree a transfer fee, and Trippier remains with the La Liga champions.

Ruben Neves

United were not able to make up their mind in time for the Portuguese midfielder.

Transfer guru and journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed on his ‘The Here We Go” podcast United had became very interested in Wolves midfield general Ruben Neves.

Scott McTominay’s injury and Fred’s obvious discomfort as playing as a lone defensive midfielder, prompted United to consider new midfield options to solidify the middle of the park.

However, United ended their interest in the Portuguese and the midfielder did at one point look to be heading to Spurs, but a move did not materialise.

Saul Niguez

Saul chose the Blues ahead of the Reds.

Before Chelsea swayed the Spanish midfielder to join the Blues, reports from AS Diario claimed the Atletico Madrid midfielder was “imminently” going to join United.

However, the 26-year-old Spaniard in the end snubbed the Reds to join the reining European champions, in a move frustrating United fans who were crying out for a new central midfielder.

United were not able to sign another central midfielder before the end of the transfer window; therefore, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will have to make do with the current options they have.
