Reported Arsenal and Spurs target Manuel Locatelli deserves the chance to join a major European club in the wake of Euro 2020, Sassuolo teammate Francesco Caputo has told Sky Italia, via TMW.
If the Neroverdi hoped to ensure one of Italian football’s worst-kept secrets stayed under wraps, they could have done without the ill-timed injury that ruled Marco Verratti out of Italy’s European Championship opener a fortnight ago.
Because, in Verratti’s absence, Locatelli has dazzled on the biggest of stages, followingup an impressive display against Turkey with a magnificent – and rare – brace in the 3-0 trouncing of Switzerland.
Unsurprisingly, speculation surrounding Locatelli’s future has gone into overdrive in the past few weeks.
Arsenal and Spurs vie for Euro 2020 star Locatelli
Gazzetta dello Sport claims Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a man who would allow Spurs to play a progressive, possession-heavy style once more after those retina-scraping, yawn-inducing displays under Jose Mourinho.
Arsenal are interested too, seeing the £43 million maestro as the ideal foil for Thomas Partey at the heart of Mikel Arteta’s engine room.
And Caputo, the veteran striker who has watched Locatelli blossom in two years at the Mapei Stadium, wouldn’t begrudge his teammate if he decided to move on this summer.
“The transfer market will bring some news but we have an important club behind us that can make up for Locatelli’s possible departure,” says Caputo, who missed out on Italy’s Euro 2020 squad despite scoring 32 Serie A goals in the past two seasons.
“It is right that Manuel goes to play in teams that aim to win trophies.”
Locatelli available if big offer arrives
Sassuolo’s chief executive has already admitted he won’t stand in Locatelli’s way if a big offer arrives.
Manchester City were reported to have made the former AC Milan youngster their number one midfield target a few months ago, via the Daily Mail. However, the enduring brilliance of Fernandinho means the Premier League champions are now looking to reinforce elsewhere, with Jack Grealish and Harry Kane coming to the fore.
