Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is considering his future at the club after he was left out of the squad altogether against Manchester City in the FA Cup, alerting Leicester City and West Ham in the process.
The England international, 23, has started just 12 Premier League games this season, falling down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard at the helm in January. Tammy Abraham scored 18 goals in all competitions last term and even though he’s the Blues’ top scorer with 12 goals in 30 appearances this term, Thomas Tuchel has given him limited opportunities to shine and left him out of his squad for the FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City.
Now, the 23-year-old, increasingly improbable to make Gareth Southgate-managed England’s Euro 2020 squad this summer, is ‘considering seeking a fresh opportunity following his latest snub by Thomas Tuchel, who has preferred to utilise Timo Werner and Kai Havertz up front for Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Leicester City have enjoyed another solid campaign under Brendan Rodgers as they aim to make it to the top four after narrowly missing out last season. Rodgers and co. must be thrilled after the Foxes beat Southampton at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday to reach their first FA Cup final since 1969.
Leicester City must plan for life without Jamie Vardy
Jamie Vardy has been a brilliant servant for Leicester City since arriving from Fleetwood Town in 2012. He was such a crucial player for the Foxes in their fairytale 2015-16 title-winning campaign, scoring 24 league goals—only one goal behind then Golden Boot winner Harry Kane. With 12 goals in 27 league appearances, the former England striker is still going strong and competing with the best in the division.
However, Vardy has netted just once in 19 appearances since Christmas, which should slightly concern Rodgers. The goals will eventually start flowing for Vardy, but at the age of 34, Leicester must start planning for life without the wily Englishman.
Kelechi Iheanacho has stepped up to the plate in Vardy’s dip in form, scoring freely of late. He netted the only goal against Southampton at the Wembley Stadium that sent the Foxes to the FA Cup final. However, whether or not the Nigerian international ends the season on a high note remains to be seen.
Even if Iheanacho brings consistency to his game and continues scoring goals, it would be wise on Rodgers’ part to sign a replacement for the ageing Vardy this summer.
Tammy Abraham has the tools to succeed at the King Power Stadium
Leicester’s interest in Tammy Abraham doesn’t come as a surprise at all. Abraham has done well at Chelsea since returning from his prolific loan spell at Aston Villa in the 2018/19 campaign, scoring 26 goals to help achieve promotion for Dean Smith’s side. Prior to his move to Villa, he scored 23 times for Bristol City on loan during the 2016/17 season but only registered eight goals on loan for Swansea City in the Premier League in the following year.
At the age of 23, the England international has gained decent experience playing in the English top-flight. Alongside Vardy, James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Ayoze Perez, he would get a chance to improve himself at Leicester City.
With a player of Abraham’s talent and potential, the Foxes cannot afford to miss out on him and they must do everything possible to bring the English striker to the King Power Stadium if Chelsea are open to selling him this summer.
