WITH LESS THAN A MONTH until World Cup qualifying, United States U-20 national team head coach Tab Ramos revealed a 19-man roster for an upcoming training camp in Honduras.
The camp will feature two games against the host country and many, if not all, of the players on this squad will be part of U-20 World Cup qualifying next month where the roster will be limited to 20 players.
It has been a solid year for the U-20 team, which has a record of 4-1-2 in international competition and 10-2-2 overall in 2014. In its most recent competition in Spain, the U.S. defeated Russia and Ireland before falling to Canada.
Qualifying is typically a challenge for the U.S. U-20 team because European clubs are not required to release players for the tournament. It is unlikely that two of the team’s most promising players—Fulham’s Emerson Hyndman and Utrecht’s Rubio Rubin—will take part of qualifying. Other potential European options for qualifying are Reading’s Andrija Novakovich and Tottenham’s Cameron Carter-Vickers.
One player who will likely be the center of attention is starting goalkeeper Zack Steffen who will arrive in camp fresh on the heels of signing a professional contract with SC Freiburg of the German Bundesliga.
Here is the complete roster:
GOALKEEPERS: Santiago Castaño (New York Red Bulls; Union City, N.J.), Zack Steffen (SC Freiburg; Downingtown, Pa.)
DEFENDERS: Michael Amick (UCLA; Sunnyvale, Calif.), Conor Donovan (North Carolina State; Fuquay-Varina, N.C.), Matthew Miazga (New York Red Bulls; Clifton, N.J.), Shaquell Moore (Unattached; Powder Springs, Ga.), John Requejo (Club Tijuana; Carpinteria, Calif.),Tyler Turner (Orlando City SC; West Haven, Conn.)
MIDFIELDERS: Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas; Plano, Texas), Fernando Arce (Club Tijuana; Chula Vista, Calif.), Russell Canouse (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim; Lancaster, Pa.), Marco Delgado (Toronto FC; Glendora, Calif.), Romain Gall (Columbus Crew; Herndon, Va.), Lynden Gooch (Sunderland AFC; Santa Cruz, Calif.), Joel Soñora (CA Boca Juniors; Buenos Aires, Argentina)
FORWARDS: Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana; Chula Vista, Calif.), Bradford Jamieson IV (LA Galaxy; Los Angeles, Calif.), Amando Moreno (Club Tijuana; Morganville, N.J.), Tommy Thompson (San Jose Earthquakes; Loomis, Calif.)
