Switzerland vs Turkey build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Switzerland have only advanced from the group stage in one of their previous four European Championship campaigns, but they are still hopeful of making it two in five this year (and two in a row). They will have been disappointed by their 1-1 draw with Wales, losing the lead, while their 3-0 defeat to Italy put them in a tough position with one point from their opening two games. However, Switzerland can still finish second – but they need to beat Turkey to stand a chance. Switzerland are three points behind Wales and have an inferior goal difference, so will require Wales to also lose with a significant enough swing to secure automatic qualifying. But a win along may also be enough to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

Turkey, on the other hand, need to win and other results to go their way to reach the last-16 as one of the best third-placed teams. Senol Gunes’ team are bottom of Group A without a point, losing their opening two games 3-0 and 2-0 to Italy and Wales respectively. As a result, they can no longer qualify automatically and must beat Switzerland and hope their three points is enough to keep their Euro 2020 journey alive. However, Turkey will need a big performance shift, having failed to impress at Euro 2020 so far.

  • Switzerland (vs Italy): Sommer; Schar, Elvedi, Akanji; Mbabu, Xhaka, Freuler, Rodriguez; Shaqiri; Seferovic, Embolo.
  • Turkey (vs Wales): Cakir; Celik, Soyuncu, Ayhan, Meras*; Yokuslu; Under, Tufan, Calhanoglu, Karaman; Yilmaz.

Switzerland have no injury concerns but Umut Meras will miss the game through injury for Turkey.

Players to watch:

  • Switzerland: Both of these sides need goals to even stand a chance of reaching the last-16, so they will also need their star men to pull out a big performance. For Switzerland, that’s Haris Seferovic. The Benfica striker scored 22 goals in 31 league games for the Portuguese club last season but has failed to bring that form into Euro 2020 so far, without a goal, and even being substituted at half-time against Italy. Seferovic has managed just 48 touches on the ball in 129 minutes and four shots, none of which have hit the target – though he has created three chances.
  • Turkey: Joining Seferovic in Struggle Town is Burak Yilmaz, who was phenomenal for Lille as they shocked France to win Ligue 1 last season. Going into the tournament off the back of 16 goals in 28 league matches, Yilmaz has failed to make a telling impact in either of Turkey’s matches so far, although he has had a goal disallowed for offside. Like Seferovic, Yilmaz has fairly quiet when on the pitch, with 65 touches in 180 minutes but he has managed seven shots – with only five players managing poor. However, he has hit the target with just one of those shots (not including the disallowed effort), and missed a big opportunity against Wales when the score was 1-0. Turkey need their talisman this weekend.
