Supersport United coach Gavin Hunt has noted with concern his side’s ability to play consistently and create chances, but are not giving positive results. He was speaking ahead of their DStv Premiership match against Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday.
It will be the second Tshwane Derby in a matter of days after the MTN-8 Cup quarter-final last weekend which Sundowns won 2-nil. Results have not been coming SuperSport’s way since the start of the season. After six matches in all competitions, they have managed just one win.
They have another tough assignment against a Sundowns team that has a much better win ratio. The two sides played in a cup fixture on Sunday and the rivalry will be renewed again on Friday. They have fresh memories of that match and have noted their shortcomings from that encounter.
“We have to believe in ourselves, what we did right in the previous cup game we need to continue with that and try keep the same intensity and concentration for the duration of the match because we held them for 80 minutes, they went and scored two goals in the last 10 minutes. We lost concentration which we need to sort out and I think we are capable of getting three points,” says Aubrey Ngoma.
Although the lack of goals has been a concern for Gavin Hunt, he doesn’t fault the performance and attitude from the players.
“I think we have been very consistent, creating chances even against the best side in the country Sundowns. We created some good opportunities, we could have scored before they even did anything. They could have also scored but we had chances, it’s not like playing a good team and you are not creating anything,” says Hunt.
Hunt, who is also in a rebuilding phase, introduced three young players for their PSL debut against Sundowns in their previous meeting. And while he is willing to give the young players an opportunity, which could compromise results, he is confident the risks will yield results in the near future.
“I believe in them, I throw them in, we put them in, they need to be coached obviously but they need to have the right attitudes as well. And in the long term we will benefit, short term we might suffer, we will suffer a little bit,” Hunt added.
It will be another high profile match for Matsatsantsa a Pitori with the hope of another league win which could turn their fortunes around.
