Steven Gerrard in Rangers ‘naive’ warning as boss demands focus Dundee United clash

Steven Gerrard reckons it would be naive of Rangers to look past Dundee United this weekend – even with a mammoth Champions League clash with Malmo on the horizon.

Gerrard’s side take on the Tangerines in Saturday’s early kick-off but you could argue they have bigger fish to fry just a few days later.

They lost 2-1 to Malmo in Sweden and need a big Ibrox response if they are to keep their Champions League dream alive on Tuesday night.

But the Premiership is key for Rangers too as they look to defend the title they wrestled off Celtic last season and Gerrard says that’s why they can’t afford to prioritise their European game over a trip to Tannadice.

Kemar Roofe and Glen Kamara are expected to play a major part against United after they were left out of the Champions League squad due to injury and suspension respectively.

And while returning stars could lead to some rotation, Gerrard, speaking to Sky Sports, insist they won’t be taking United lightly.

“You’ve got to play what’s in front of you at the end of the day,” he said.

“This is a big important league game so it would be very naive to think we can just focus on Tuesday.

“We’ll freshen the team up, we’ve got some bodies now returning for us who obviously aren’t available on Tuesday.

“It is what it is, but we’ve got to face every challenge as it comes and give it full focus and full respect. Otherwise we might not get the result that we’re all after.”
