Sounders FC Prepares for Cascadia Clash as It Hosts Vancouver Whitecaps FC

October 9, 2021 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Seattle Sounders FC News Release

SEATTLE, WASH. – After rolling past the Colorado Rapids, Seattle Sounders FC (16-5-6, 54 points) prepares to host Cascadia rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC (9-8-10, 37 points) on Saturday, October 9 at Lumen Field (6:00 p.m. PT / FOX 13+, Prime Video, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM). Media resources for tonight’s match are available below, including soundbytes from Sounders FC midfielder Kelyn Rowe, forward Fredy Montero and Head
Coach Brian Schmetzer.

Sounders FC and Vancouver have faced each other one other time this season, a 2-2 draw at Lumen Field that saw Raúl Ruidíaz and Jimmy Medranda score for the home side. The two will close out regular-season play with a Decision Day matchup at BC Place on November 7.

Saturday’s match marks the 145th meeting all-time between the two sides, dating back to 1974 in the NASL, with Seattle leading the all-time series 70-50-24. Seattle also leads the MLS regular-season series 14-7-7. It is the third match for Seattle in this year’s battle for the Cascadia Cup, after defeating Portland 6-2 on August 15 and falling to Portland 2-0 on August 29. Sounders FC trails the Timbers by three points in the 2021 Cascadia Cup standings.

Seattle is also looking to qualify for the Audi MLS Playoffs for the 13th consecutive year. A result against the Canadian side would guarantee the streak continues for the Rave Green, currently the longest active playoff streak in MLS and second-longest among any pro teams in the five major men’s U.S. sports leagues.

Vancouver is amidst a strong run of form, winning six of its last nine MLS matches, averaging 2.22 points-per-game and outscoring opponents 15-6.

Following Saturday’s match, Sounders FC heads to Texas for a weekend matchup against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, October 16 (5:30 p.m. PT / FOX 13+, Prime Video, 1090 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
