Rio Ferdinand has urged his former club Manchester United to launch a transfer bid for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin during the summer transfer window, claiming the England striker would be a “fantastic signing” for the Red Devils.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, 24, has been in sparkling form for Everton this season, scoring 14 goals in 26 Premier League appearances. The England international’s form has been instrumental in the Toffees’ bid for European football next season, as they sit four points adrift of sixth-place Liverpool with a game in hand.
After backing his 15-goal haul last term with 19 goals across all competitions in the ongoing campaign, the striker is expected to be a part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s European Championship.
Meanwhile, Manchester United strengthened their second spot in the table with a 3-1 comeback victory over Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the weekend. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have won their last four league games that sees them 11 points behind table-toppers Manchester City, with the Red Devils having a game in hand as things stand.
Manchester United must sign a prolific striker this summer
The Red Devils have not at all been shy of goals this season, netting 61 in 31 games. In fact, they are the second highest goalscorers in the division, just six shy of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
Bruno Fernandes is Manchester United’s top scorer with 24 goals across all competitions, followed by Marcus Rashford, who has netted 20 so far. Signed on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, Edinson Cavani has impressed with his work-rate, movement and predatory instincts in the penalty area, scoring eight goals in 29 games. That’s a decent return from a player who was brought in to be a backup for Anthony Martial.
Martial, meanwhile, has failed to replicate his last season’s numbers, managing a paltry return of four league goals in 22 games. Young Mason Greenwood has endured a difficult second season after a brilliant breakthrough campaign that yielded 17 goals in all formats.
Given the fact that Martial and Greenwood haven’t scored goals consistently and Cavani yet to decide whether or not he’ll stay at the club for another season, Solskjaer must sign a prolific striker to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
Will Dominic Calvert-Lewin be a good fit at Old Trafford?
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has improved leaps and bounds under the management of Carlo Ancelotti, and with just eight league games left for Everton, he’ll be desperate to break the 20-goal barrier this season. He has proven to be a real handful for the defender and has shown the knack of scoring scrappy goals for the Toffees. Quick, powerful and strong in the air, the 24-year-old would provide the aerial threat in the opposition box which Solskjaer’s side have often lacked this term.
At the age of 24, the England international has the potential to be one of the best strikers in the Premier League. A move for Calvert-Lewin would not only offer United an outright goalscorer but also someone who’ll give them a different dimension to attack. Thus, the Red Devils must listen to Rio Ferdinand and make an attempt to sign Calvert-Lewin.
