River Plate unveil stadium redevelopment plans

BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) — Reigning Argentine top-flight champions River Plate have outlined plans to transform their Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires into the biggest football venue in South America.

The club will invest 40 million US dollars to increase the Monumental’s capacity from 72,000 to 81,000 spectators.

The revamped arena will also include dozens of new corporate boxes, an upscale restaurant with a full view of the pitch and three levels of additional parking space. Refurbishment work is scheduled to begin next month and end in July 2024.

“This represents a very important milestone in the institutional life of the club and is the result of a very long process,” River executive secretary Stefano Di Carlo said.

The expansion will see the stadium surpass Lima’s Monumental and Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana — which can accommodate up to 80,093 and 78,000 fans, respectively — as the largest in the region.

A carefully devised work program will allow River to continue playing home games at the venue throughout the entire redevelopment period, according to Di Carlo.

River officials said the club had also decided to seek a naming rights sponsor for the stadium.

The planned upgrade follows an initial 11-month redevelopment phase, completed last year, that included the removal of an athletics track and the installation of a hybrid pitch.
