BUENOS AIRES, March 13 (Xinhua) — Juan Fernando Quintero, Julian Alvarez and Enzo Fernandez all scored from the penalty spot as River Plate cruised to a 4-0 home win over Gimnasia in Argentina’s Primera Division on Sunday.
Fernandez and Alvarez gave the hosts a 2-0 lead at halftime before Quintero converted his attempt with 18 minutes remaining.
Braian Romero completed the rout with a close-range finish in stoppage time as River secured their fourth win in six matches this campaign.
Marcelo Gallardo’s men lead the 14-team Group A standings with 13 points, ahead of second-placed Union on goal difference. Gimnasia, meanwhile, are 11th, eight points further back.
Meanwhile, Boca Juniors rose to third in Group B after a second-half strike from Luis Advincula gave the Buenos Aires giants a 1-0 win at Estudiantes.
In other Primera Division fixtures on Sunday, Colon drew 1-1 at Lanus and Union clinched a 2-1 home victory over Banfield.
