Red Bulls Defeat FC Cincinnati 1-0

October 2, 2021 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – New York Red Bulls News Release

The New York Red Bulls (9-11-7, 34 points) defeated FC Cincinnati (4-15-8, 20 points), 1-0, on Saturday night at TQL Stadium.

The Red Bulls opened the scoring in the 73rd minute, when defender Sean Nealis played midfielder Cristian Cásseres, Jr., who slotted a pass-through Cincinnati’s backline for defender Andrew Gutman. Gutman received the ball and placed it in the bottom left corner to give New York the lead.

New York extended their unbeaten streak to five matches for the first time since 2020, which extended October 10 to October 28.

Gutman scored his second goal of the season and his first since April 25 against Los Angeles Galaxy. He recorded his first career MLS game-winning goal.

The Hinsdale, Ill. native is now tied with Andrés Reyes for the most goals by a defender this season.

Cásseres, Jr. has recorded an assist in two-straight matches and now has tallied nine in his MLS career.

Nealis tallied his second assist of the season, which is a new career-high after posting one assist per season in the last two years.

The Red Bulls have now won three-straight road matches for the first time since 2017, which extended from June 18 to July 22. This included wins at Philadelphia Union (2-0), New England Revolution (3-2), and Minnesota United (3-0).

Goalkeeper Carlos Coronel earned his ninth shutout of the season and his fourth on the road this year. He now ranks tied for third in MLS.

Coronel moved into a tie with Jonny Walker for sixth place in franchise history in shutouts with nine.

The Brazilian goalkeeper recorded three saves in the match tonight and now sits in sixth place in MLS with 78 saves on the year.

During the Red Bulls unbeaten streak, they have only conceded two goals, which is tied for the second lowest in MLS during that timespan.

New York has now had 13 different players record a goal this season and 14 different players tally an assist.

After the match tonight, midfielder Omir Fernandez has set new career-highs in games played (19), games started (6), and minutes played (625).

With the appearance tonight, Red Bulls Captain Sean Davis has become the third player in franchise history to make 200 career appearances in all competitions.

Davis has moved into sole possession of fifth place in franchise history in MLS regular-season games started with 134.

Since 2015, New York has won 34 away games, which is the third most in MLS.

Reyes received his fifth yellow card of the season and will be suspended for New York’s next match against Inter Miami CF.

Following Saturday’s match, New York returns to Red Bull Arena for a two-match homestand, beginning with Inter Miami CF on Saturday, October 9.
