TRACK RECORD
Rangers had a patchy recent record with appointing managers prior to the appointment of Steven Gerrard, but the same can’t be said for Ross Wilson.
The Gers sporting director has thus far proved adept at working the managerial market – during a career which has taken in Falkirk, Watford, Huddersfield Town, Southampton and Glasgow Rangers.
That is why links with Premier League bosses such as Southampton’s Ralph Hasenhuttl and Burnley’s Sean Dyche won’t go away – despite the financial difficulties of having to prise them away from clubs in the biggest league in the world.
Wilson worked with Dyche at Watford alongside current Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay, with Dyche inheriting the role when Mackay left for Cardiff.
He and Les Reed helped Southampton became a conveyor belt for successful bosses – with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Ronald Koeman and Ralph Hasenhuttl all impressing.
Wilson remains close to Hasenhuttl, who has been linked with a move away from the South Coast club on several occasions.
He said on leaving St Mary’s for Ibrox: “I was very happy at Southampton and one of the reasons was my relationship with the manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, who became a close friend and still is.
“I wouldn’t have left my relationship with him for something I thought wouldn’t work.”
Shortly before he joined Rangers, he said: “The fact our choice of managers have been a success isn’t a fluke. Nor is the fact we improved our league position for seven years running.
“We have 60 staff, we have a structure and a strategy, but we constantly review the network on a three-year horizon, People ask ‘do you scout, do you video scout, data scout, are you stats based?’ It’s all of it, integrated into one.”
