Rangers learn Champions League foes as they get chance to banish Malmo pain in third round clash

Rangers will take on Malmo in the third round of Champions League qualifying – the same opposition as their last tie in the competition a decade ago.

The Swedish side overcame Finnish opponents HJK in Helsinki in their second round tie on Tuesday night and will now take on Steven Gerrard’s Scottish champions.

Leading 2-1 from the first leg, Malmo got off to a shocking start when Miro Tenho opened the scoring for the home side inside the first minute.

But 10 minutes later they drew level on the night and went ahead on aggregate again when Anders Christiansen netted the equaliser.

They may have thought the tie was done and dusted after Veljko Birmancevic put Malmo ahead on the night in the second half – only for super sub Riku Riski to reply for the home side seconds after coming on.

But despite having to negotiate seven minutes of added time, Malmo held on and won the right to host the Govan side on Wednesday, August 4 before the return leg at Ibrox on Tuesday, August 10.

It’s a chance for Rangers to avenge a heartbreaking qualifier that took place this time 10 years ago under Ally McCoist.

Malmo shocked the Gers 1-0 in Glasgow before holding their opponents 1-1 back in Sweden, in a match that saw three red cards including dismissals for Steven Whittaker and Madjid Bougherra.
