MORE FROM MURTY ON GILMOUR

“I’d love to see him back in a Rangers jersey and playing for the club. I’d hope that he’d really enjoy that experience. I would’ve loved to have seen it back then. But I understand why he went.  We tried loads of stuff to get him to stay.

“All we could do was show our regard for him and it was up to him to choose.

“If you’ve a kid in your system and you think they need to stay to get to the next level or you’re protecting the club’s interests, then go with that.

“Conversely, if the best thing is to let them leave then you should have the courage of your convictions.

“If someone comes out of your environment and flourishes then you’ve made the right choice. You should still celebrate their achievement.

“It was the right choice of club, right for Billy and his family. Chelsea were tremendous in the way they approached it and no one got upset.

“Look at what the kid has done since. You see him playing for Chelsea, you see him holding the Champions League trophy and you say, ‘I know that guy!’.

“He was Man of the Match against England, I love watching him for Scotland. Yet he doesn’t appear to have changed, he’s still the same lad.’’
