PSV will be looking to make a first major step towards playing Champions League group stage football when they face Galatasaray at the Philips Stadion on Wednesday evening (20:00 UK time).

It’s been a while since PSV Eindhoven played Champions League football. Mark van Bommel’s men back in 2018 finished bottom of a group featuring Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan with only two points accumulated. They last entered the second qualifying round in 2019 but were dumped out by FC Basel and since then de Boeren have exclusively played Europa League football. As for Galatasaray their absence has been a similar length. You have to go back to 2019 for the last time Istanbul’s most decorated club tasted Champions League group phase action. They weren’t able to reach the knockout phase — which they last did in 2013/14 — with Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Club Brugge finishing ahead of them. Under the leadership of legendary boss Fatih Terim they finished second in Turkey’s top division last season and they go into this first leg on the back of a strong pre-season.

Player to watch: Eran Zahavi (PSV)
The stories of Eran Zahavi’s exploits in China presented a picture of a relentless marksman that could potentially do the business in Europe; the 33-year-old marksman — who who averaged a goal every 99 minutes for Guangzhou City and previously enjoyed a brief spell at Palermo — answered PSV’s call and he’s not looked back since. His debut campaign in Eindhoven saw him bag 17 goals across 33 matches in all competitions. More importantly six of those came in six European games. Zahavi has shown the appetite to lead PSV’s line and with creative players around him such as Mario Götze and Marco van Ginkel the Israeli striker could be the one to spearhead the 1988 European champions back into the big time.
