PSV go top with win over Vitesse

PSV Eindhoven are now clear at the top of the table after they defeated Vitesse Arnhem 2-0 on Saturday.

Roger Schmidt’s side knew a win would take them three points clear at the top since Ajax is playing on Sunday. However, PSV went into the game without the injured Cody Gakpo, Noni Madueke, Jordan Teze, and Eran Zahavi, while Philipp Max was missing due to a positive covid test.

Despite the absentees, PSV were stronger than Vitesse from the start and Ibrahim Sangare gave them the lead after 19 minutes with a lovely strike.

Joel Drommel made a good save to deny Vitesse an equaliser before Bruma made it 2-0 after 30 minutes with a lovely volley.

Vitesse were hoping to get back into the game in the second half with Thomas Letsch making a double change at the break. However, a comeback never seemed on the cards.

Mario Gotze went close to a third but his strike hit the post before ending up in Markus Schubert’s hands. Maxi Romero then had the ball in the net for PSV before the end, but it was ruled out for offside.

PSV are now three points clear at the top, while Vitesse is fifth.
