Pavon on target as Boca Juniors continue recovery

BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — Argentina international winger Cristian Pavon scored his first goal of the season as Boca Juniors beat Platense 3-1 away in the Primera Division on Wednesday.

Norberto Briasco opened the scoring from long range for the visitors before Nicolas Bertolo equalized with a low finish on the stroke of halftime.

Diego Gonzalez restored Boca’s advantage after the restart with a low drive from outside the area and Pavon, a late substitute for Briasco, put the result beyond doubt by curling a 20-yard shot into the top right corner in stoppage time.

After failing to win any of their first six matches, Boca now have two consecutive victories under new manager Sebastian Battaglia, who replaced Miguel Russo last week.

In other Primera Division fixtures on Wednesday, Velez Sarsfield drew 1-1 at Huracan, Lanus won 2-0 at home to Gimnasia, Defensa y Justicia secured a 2-0 home victory over Newell’s Old Boys and Rosario Central won 4-0 at home to Arsenal Sarandi.
