Paris Saint-Germain have offered striker Mauro Icardi to Newcastle United as the Ligue 1 club looks to offload him during the winter transfer market.
Mauro Icardi, 28, has been relegated down the attacking pecking order following the arrival of Lionel Messi on a free transfer from Barcelona in the summer. The centre-forward has only started five Ligue 1 games this season and appears to have no future at the club under Mauricio Pochettino.
Frustrated with lack of game time and a poor run of form, the Argentinean international is looking to leave the Parc des Princes. Both Juventus and Tottenham have been offered the 28-year-old as well, with a return to Italy most likely when the transfer window reopens next month.
Meanwhile, mega-rich Newcastle United are embroiled in a relegation battle and are the only Premier League side with no wins so far this season. The Toon Army lie rock bottom in the table for a reason and decided to turn to Eddie Howe last month to help them maintain their Premier League status.
With funds no more a problem after the Saudi-led takeover, the Magpies are scouring the market for new signings to escape their relegation battle.
Attacking reinforcements is a must for Newcastle
Newcastle have struggled for goals this season, netting only 16 in 14 games. Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson have been a couple of bright spots in an otherwise torrid campaign for the Magpies. Saint-Maximin and Wilson have lacked support up front more often than not, leading to the club’s inconsistency in finding the back of the net.
This speaks volumes about Newcastle’s problems in front of goal and it’s an area Eddie Howe should make one of his priorities to address in January.
Mauro Icardi could be a marquee signing for the Toon Army
PSG want to offload Mauro Icardi off their books and have already offered him to a few clubs, including Newcastle United.
To put things into perspective, Newcastle certainly need a new striker to provide cover and competition for first-choice Callum Wilson and Icardi is an attractive option for Eddie Howe’s side given his impressive goal-scoring record.
Icardi made his name at Inter Milan, where he netted 124 goals in 219 appearances before moving to PSG in 2019. While he has struggled with form and fitness this season, the Argentinean centre-forward has a fine overall record of 36 goals in 77 appearances for PSG, which further documents the quality of striker he is.
The 28-year-old is a proven striker, who otherwise has endured a blip in the form at Parc des Princes. Icardi fits the bill perfectly at Newcastle and would provide Howe’s side with goals which they desperately need in abundance. The Magpies can hugely benefit from acquiring a lethal striker like Icardi as he will instantly improve their attacking quality, whilst adding some much-needed cutting edge.
All in all, Newcastle would give themselves a better chance of avoiding relegation from the Premier League by signing the Argentinean striker from PSG.
