Chelsea had the awful news this week that it looks like Ben Chilwell could be out until January at the very least, and that might even extend to the rest of the season should he require surgery.
This is horrible for Chilwell first and foremost, having been through a very up and down season so far already. He lost his regular starting spot for both Chelsea and England at the start of the season but won them both back and was in some fine form.
It would be amazing if you guys subscribed for my project over at Si & Dan Talk Chelsea, where we are putting out so much Chelsea content including DAILY Newsletters, exclusive news, breaking news, Podcasts, interviews, inside information, and bringing in some massive guests!
But Chelsea won’t panic, there are plenty of options to provide cover without the need to dip into the market because just remember, Chilwell WILL be back and WILL become a regular for us once again.
Chelsea have a handful of players already in the squad who can do a decent job at wing back.
We saw Cesar Azpilicueta replace Chilwell against Juventus on Tuesday night and against the better teams when we are going to be defending more, he could be a good option there.
Then there is Marcos Alonso, who of course plays wing back as his natural position and provides a lot of attacking threat, perhaps not so much defensively. Against lesser teams he would be good.
Saul Niguez has played left wing back for Atletico Madrid and although he wants to play as a centre midfielder, perhaps playing anywhere on the pitch is better than not playing at all right now.
Both Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic can play wing back and Thomas Tuchel has used them both there on occasions this season. For me I would like to see Pulisic tried out there, I think since we basically use our wing backs as wingers, or number 10s, I think he could thrive their against lesser opposition.
Others could also play there, such as Reece James or Trevoh Chalobah.
Then you have the on loan players who could be recalled. Emerson Palmieri, Baba Rahman, and Ian Maatsen are all left sided players who could come in and be the cover option, especially Emerson with all his experience.
I’m sure Tuchel and the club will assess all options and make the right decision, I have full trust in them to do so.
Get better soon, Ben Chilwell!
