One last chance for Ruben Loftus-Cheek as Chelsea decide on midfielders – Talk Chelsea

Chelsea have their final pre-season friendly this evening against Tottenham before the big business really begins.

This time next week they play in the Super Cup Final, a competition that they will really want to win. Then after that, the new season begins at the weekend with a match against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

So tonight is the last chance for a number of the fringe and youth players to make an impression and seal their futures, whether that be at Chelsea this season or elsewhere.

You get the feeling that it will be the last chance for Ruben Loftus-Cheek before Thomas Tuchel makes his mind up on him this season, and you also get the feeling his future could easily tip either way.

It’s tough for him because he doesn’t ideally suit the system that Tuchel plays. He isn’t really a number 6, or a number 10, ideally his best position is an 8, although I’d sooner see him in a 10 than a 6. In the 6 role he did OK against Arsenal, but he is always going to lose possession more than the likes of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, because he is always progressive with the ball and always looking to break the lines with a pass.

So if he does stay, I can’t see him playing a lot under Tuchel IF he sticks with this formation, only perhaps as an impact sub when Tuchel does change things up on the hunt for a goal.

Also, Chelsea will only go into the season with 4 centre midfielders, and if Loftus-Cheek will be one of them, in my opinion I don’t think that will see us signing a new midfielder, for example an Aurelien Tchouameni or Declan Rice.

So that also makes me think that Loftus-Cheek could be sold or loaned out, if Chelsea want to bring in a new midfielder. I believe one must go, for one to come in.

To it really is make or break time for Loftus-Cheek, a guy who really does deserve a break wherever he ends up playing. I still have high hopes for his future, wherever it might be.
