Newcastle United have signed Joe Willock from Arsenal on a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee.

Willock’s permanent arrival comes after the 21-year old enjoyed a successful loan spell last season with eight goals in 14 appearances, of which seven goals came in seven of the Magpies’ last nine matches of the season.

Speaking on sealing his move to St James’ Park, Willock who was “buzzing” to make the move said: “I loved my time here last season and I’m really happy to be back and to be a Newcastle United player.”

Willock also paid tribute to Arsenal for supporting his decision to sign for Newcastle, commenting: “Leaving Arsenal is obviously a big step, and I’d like to thank everyone involved with the club for all their support over the years, but this is the right move to the right club at the right time for me.”

This season will see fans return and after having played just one home game for the Magpies last season in front of supporters – winning 1-0 against Sheffield United in mid-May, Willock has admitted that he “can’t wait to step out in front of a packed St. James’ Park and experience that atmosphere.”

Newcastle manager, Steve Bruce added that he is “absolutely delighted” to welcome Willock back on a permanent transfer.

Acknowledging that the club “have had to be patient and persistent” in securing this deal, Bruce believes that the wait has been worth it and thanked Managing Director, Lee Charnley for his efforts in ensuring that this deal happened.

Bruce went on to praise Willock for his qualities which he proved whilst on loan last season, adding: “Joe is a wonderful young player with all the attributes you want in a midfielder, and he certainly proved that during his time with us last season.”

Willock will wear the number 28 shirt just like he did last season, although he is ineligible to face West Ham on Sunday (15 August), due to the club’s failure to beat the 12pm deadline today (13 August) to register him and is now set to be available for next Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa on 21 August (3:00pm).
