Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has spoken about a potential bid for Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury this summer.
Reports back in the January transfer window had linked the 23-year-old, valued at £6.3m on Transfermarkt, with a move to St James’ Park, with Steve Bruce himself confirming that Choudhury was a player that he liked. But in the end, they couldn’t get a deal done in time, with the club instead opting for Joe Willock in a move that worked out pretty well.
Speaking on Loaded Mag, Kennedy spoke about the talks in January and just how close Newcastle United were to bringing him in before stating that they could make a run at him this summer as well. However, he did cautiously add that he wasn’t totally convinced that he would make that much of an impact on the team if they were to sign him:
“He was a hair’s breadth away from signing for Newcastle United in January, and he may well come back this summer, he’s a player that Steve Bruce likes a lot.
“He’s OK, I’m not going to say he’s going to change the team around, but he’s probably slightly better than some of the players that they’ve got.”
TIF Thoughts on Liam Kennedy’s comments about Newcastle United and Hamza Choudhury…
Would Hamza Choudhury be a good player for Newcastle to sign?
Yes
No
It is a move that doesn’t come off as the most inspiring that Newcastle could make, as there isn’t really anything that Choudhury stands out in.
He’s not exactly prolific when it comes to attack, with just two goals and two assists for the Foxes throughout his career. And looking back at WhoScored figures for the Leicester team last season, there wasn’t any area in attack, defence or passing that you could point to that he particularly excels in.
Perhaps he’s just a victim of the wrong system for him at Leicester and being in a new team could make him flourish, but if Newcastle really have ambitions of moving up the table, then surely they need to be looking at better players than him.
