New plan for Borussia Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji?

As reported by Bild, Borussia Dortmund could yet extend the contract of Manuel Akanji beyond 2023 if the central-defender is not sold before the September 1 transfer deadline.

This would enable Borussia Dortmund to be able to loan Akanji out for the season, before selling him in 2023. As of now, Serie A side Inter are leading the race to sign the Swiss international defender should Milan Škriniar leave the club but are still exploring other options.

As reported last week, BVB are yet to find a buyer for Akanji because the 27-year-old has deterred clubs with his salary demands – the player wants a salary around €13m but in the current market, the figure is too high and he must lower demands if he is to leave this summer.

With less than 12 months remaining on his current BVB deal, an extension at the moment seems like a possibility. Akanji dreams of one day playing in the Premier League but a move to Italy looks like a more feasible option at the minute for the former Basel defender.
