The Road to Playoffs

Ahead of the final match of the 2021 regular season, RSL sits in 8th place with 45 points in the Western Conference standings, jockeying for one of three remaining playoff positions. In order to qualify for the postseason RSL must defeat Sporting Kansas City to secure its position in the playoffs.

This Is It

Since the two sides faced each other in the 2013 MLS Cup Final, RSL has posted an 8-3-5 record with including a 3-1-3 record at Children’s Mercy Park. The only loss at Sporting in the regular season took place on April 29, 2017 when the team fell 3-0. Largely considered one of the biggest rivals for Real Salt Lake, the intensity between the two sides dates back to a preseason match in 2011 and includes a loss in penalties that cost RSL a trophy. Sunday’s match carries more significance and importance as a playoff position is on the line for RSL, while the top seed in the Western Conference is up for grabs for the hosts.

Connections: Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia was a member of Real Salt Lake during the 2010 and 2011 seasons, serving as a backup to RSL legend Nick Rimando. Since joining Sporting KC in 2015 he has appeared in 167 matches and was named 2015 MLS Comeback Player of the Year and 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.
