Messi set to stay at Barcelona after Laporta wins elections

Lionel Messi is destined to stay at FC Barcelona beyond this season, reports from Spain have claimed. Earlier this week Joan Laporta won the presidential elections at the club and one of his main jobs will be to convince Messi to stay at the club. Both have a very good relationship and it is now expected that the Argentinian will decide to sign a new contract with Barcelona to end his career with the club.

Laporta completed his return as president of Barcelona earlier this week after he collected over 50 per cent of the votes during the elections. He is now set for a new term after he was already in charge of the club in the early 2000’s. In that time frame he helped Barcelona back to the top of European football as the club enjoyed it’s most successful spell in their history.

Messi’s departure at Barcelona has looked imminent for his personal satisfaction and also for economic purposes. However, Laporta has vowed he will be doing everything he can to convince Messi to stay with the club. The forward’s contract will run out in June and the next few weeks will be crucial in deciding his future. Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have all made their interest known and would love to add the six-time Ballon d’Or winner to their ranks.
