The Eastern Giants secured their third win of their Uganda Premier League campaign, defeating Mbarara City 1-0 at Kyabazinga stadium on Tuesday. Substitute Ibrahim Nsimbe scored the only goal of the game in the second half as he powered in a volley past Muhamad Ssekaba from close range after latching on to Umar Mukobe’s cross. Neither team threatened the goal all that much in the first half.
Victory over the Ankole Lions is their second on the bounce after winning 2-0 against Onduparaka last Saturday and has thrust BUL to third position with nine points to show from their four league outings.
“I am very comfortable with the win. We played on Saturday and we embarked on a long journey from Arua. We didn’t make any change to the team that played Onduparaka; some players were a bit fatigued but the team is balanced. That is why we won,” team manager Alex Isabirye said.
Mbarara City made the brighter start as BUL sat deep in the contest’s opening stages.
Henry Kitegenyi showed some footwork before eventually being dispossessed in the box by Saidi Keni.
Umar Mukobe delivered an out swinging cross into the box, Dickson Nuwamanya rose highest but Jerome Kiirya shot wide the second ball.
Jude Ssemugabi had the visitors best chance of the half on 43 minutes, the forward sneaked through the middle towards goal. Luckily, Douglas Muganga recovered in time to make a smart stop with his feet.
The Eastern Giants regrouped at the interval and came out strongly once the action restarted.
Isabirye made his first switch in the 46′ minute with Ibrahim Mugulusi taking over from Captain George Kasonko.
Dickson Nuwamanya and Ivan Wani paved way for Simon Oketch and Ibrahim Nsimbe sixteen minutes later.
But the deadlock was broken three minute off the hour mark, courtesy of a neat through pass by Mugulusi after spotting Umar Mukobe making a run into space om the right wing.
Mukobe picked out Nsimbe and the striker shot first time into the net to score his first goal at the club.
A few moments later, Martin Aprem left John Adriko and Othien stumbling on the left, he then sent a cross only for the goalkeeper to block it for a corner.
Mukobe delivered it from the the left, Nsimbe was well positioned in the box again but this time, his efforts went over bar.
The forward thereafter got another chance but again, he sent it wide.
The Eastern Giants will next be in action away to URA on Saturday November 20#
