BUL football club has advanced into the quarter finals of the Stanbic Uganda Cup after beating Bright Stars 4-3 on penalties on Tuesday.
Jerome Kirya missed his kick from the penalty mark during the shoot out but Aggrey Madoi, Ibrahim Mugulusi, Ibrahim Kazindula and Richard Wandyaka buried theirs in to ensure we progressed to the next round.
The game was tied at 2-2 by the end of the regular 90 minutes at Kavumba recreation grounds.
Karimu Ndugwa stretched his impressive scoring form with a brace to make it four goals in this competition just after two games, with his goal tally across all competitions also rising to six in eight matches for BUL.
Alex Isabirye’s side was in touching distance to the next stage within the 90 minutes, only to be pegged back by Nelson Senkatuka’s equaliser seven minutes from time.
Ndugwa put the Eastern Giants ahead after 25 minutes with a tap in off Ibrahim Kazindula’s rebound, but his effort was cancelled out by goalkeeper Derick Were on 55 minutes.
The forward completed his brace on 77 minutes to restore our lead.
But the game would have another twist when Senkatuka rose highest to plant home a header past John Okurut to bring his side back into the game.
Either side failed to find a winning goal before the fulltime whistle, and as the competition’s rules state, the referee called for the penalty shoot out to separate the two teams.
Focus now returns to Uganda Premier League and Busoga United lies in wait this Friday at Kakindu stadium.
