Marseille vs Lens build-up & previous line-ups:

Coming into this latest round of Ligue 1 fixtures Marseille have positioned themselves as Paris Saint-Germain’s nearest challengers. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are seven points ahead of Jorge Sampaoli’s men which makes Les Olympiens best of the rest. Both of these ‘Classique’ rivals are the only unbeaten clubs in France’s top division with Marseille having registered four wins from their opening six league outings. They also enter this weekend’s game at Stade Vélodrome unbeaten in their previous 11 Ligue 1 home matches (eight wins and three draws), which is The Phocaeans’ longest such run since April-December 2016 (12).

Not that far down from Marseille in the young Ligue 1 championship table are Lens who sit fourth on 12 points. A slightly inferior goal difference to Angers prevented them being a single position below this Sunday’s opponents. Franck Haise’s side have tasted one defeat so far this season, which came last time out at home against Strasbourg, when their visitors eked out a narrow 0-1 win. That setback ended a seven-game unbeaten run (three wins and four draws) stretching back into last season. That being said, Lens are unbeaten in their first three Ligue 1 away games of the season for the first time since 2002/03 (when they finished eighth) and have not done better since 1991/92 (four, again finishing eighth that season)

Player to watch: Pau Lopez (Marseille)

Possessing the second meanest defence heading into matchday eight is Marseille who have conceded just five goals across their opening six league fixtures. Nice, who have also played the same amount of games, sits in front of Sampaoli’s side in that particular standing (three goals). A big reason behind The Olympians stellar regard is goalkeeper Pau López whom they acquired on a season-long loan from Roma this past summer. The 26-year-old shot-stopper missed the club’s opening three matches, due to recovering from a shoulder injury, but since being introduced he’s kept three consecutive clean sheets. He’s the first goalkeeper to achieve this for Marseille in the top-flight since François Lemasson in 1997. Lemasson wasn’t able to make it four-in-a-row. López is 90 minutes away from going one better.
