BUENOS AIRES, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) — Marcelo Gallardo has agreed to extend his contract as River Plate manager for another year, the Argentine club said on Wednesday.
Gallardo’s previous deal was due to expire on December 31 and local media had linked the 45-year-old with the vacant Uruguay coaching position.
“One more year together, let’s aim for more,” River posted on social media alongside a photo of a club shirt with Gallardo’s name on the back.
River later convened a press conference in which Gallardo told reporters he had decided to follow his heart.
“I didn’t have much time to think about it but after a few days of reflection … I’ve decided to do what feels right,” Gallardo said.
A former River Plate midfielder who was capped 44 times for Argentina’s national team, Gallardo is recognized as one of the greatest managers in the Buenos Aires club’s history.
Since taking charge of the first team in June 2014, he has led the Millonarios to 13 trophies, including the 2015 and 2018 Copa Libertadores crowns and this year’s Primera Division league title.
