After just 11 games of the Premier League season, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to already have a battle on his hands, not only to save United’s season, but also his job.
The Norwegian witnessed his side being humiliated 5-0 at home to Liverpool last month, and then was powerless as the Red Devils fell to a 2-0 defeat to fellow rivals Manchester City a fortnight later.
The defeat to City was the ninth game that United have failed to win this season, and their fourth defeat in six league games.
Cristiano Ronaldo has scored late goals in three of United’s Champions League games so far, rescuing a total of seven points for Solskjaer’s side, who would almost certainly have been eliminated already otherwise.
Now, the former United striker is facing unprecedented pressure, with several fans and pundits calling for him to be sacked.
Those in charge at the club have reiterated their support for the manager throughout the season, but pressure will only build as his trophy less spell continues.
Aside from Solskjaer’s struggles, Donny van de Beek is another big name at the club who is growing increasingly unhappy, although for very different reasons.
The Dutch midfielder has been left out in the cold by his boss ever since his arrival from Ajax, and many people feel his has been treated unfairly.
The 24-year-old has played just 16 minutes of Premier League football so far this season, despite his side’s on-field struggles.
Now, after a nightmare spell in Manchester, it appears that the Dutch international could finally be on his way out of Old Trafford, with two Premier League clubs waiting to snap him up.
Van de Beek has spent most of his short United career on the bench
As per ESPN, both Newcastle United and Everton have allegedly expressed an interest in taking the Dutchman on loan in January.
The report suggests that the Magpies, fresh from their £300 million takeover, could target Van de Beek in January as a short term fix in their efforts to ensure survival under new boss Eddie Howe.
There has been much talk of which players Newcastle could target next summer, however the likelihood is that they will rely on loan deals and more humble signings in January to ensure their survival in the meantime.
Everton, meanwhile, have been inconsistent this season under former Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez and could look to Van de Beek to bolster their options ahead of the second half of the season.
Van de Beek, a £35 million arrival from the Netherlands last year, has made just 21 appearances for the club so far, with his only starts this year being in the Carabao Cup and in the Champions League.
The Netherlands international is behind Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Fred, Scott McTominay and even Nemanja Matic in the pecking order at present, and doesn’t look likely to change that any time soon.
