Manchester City star hails Pep Guardiola’s reported £42.5m target

Ferran Torres has lauded Antoine Griezmann while speaking with Marca, amid reports Pep Guardiola wants Manchester City to sign the Barcelona forward this summer.

The Spanish publication caught up with Torres as he trained in his hometown of Foios after competing at Euro 2020. Luis Enrique deployed the 21-year-old in all six of La Roja’s fixtures, with Torres netting twice and providing an assist.

Griezmann also featured in all four of France’s European Championship fixtures, but scored just once. The forward will now hold crunch talks with Barcelona over his future in Catalunya next week, per La Vanguardia.

Barcelona must free around €200m (£170m) from their wage bill and are open to selling Griezmann for just €50m (£42.5m), amid interest from Manchester City. Foot Mercato claim Guardiola has even phoned for the forward as he searches for a new attacking figurehead.

Barcelona have also strengthened Manchester City’s bid, as Sport claim they are reluctant to sell Griezmann back to Atletico Madrid, which would be his preference. Atleti are unable to meet his wage demands, as well, as the 30-year-old currently earns £594,000-per-week.

Torres could not confirm if Guardiola had contacted Griezmann over a move from Barcelona to Manchester City this summer. But the Spanish winger notes the Citizens want all the top talents possible, so that they can win everything.

“He is a great player,” Torres said. “Obviously, he is at Barca, let’s see what can happen. I don’t know if Guardiola has spoken to him. But City is one of the best teams in the world that wants to have the best players to win everything.”

Barcelona star Griezmann could get the most out of Torres at Manchester City

Guardiola signing Griezmann could see the Barcelona forward get the most out of Torres at Manchester City next season. Torres made 36 appearances in all competitions during his debut year at the Etihad Stadium following a £21m move from Valencia last summer.

And Torres impressed with 13 goals, seven in the Premier League, but lacked somewhat on the creative side. The 17-cap winger ended the term with just three assists to show for his efforts. Of those, two came in the top-flight with one in October and one in January.

Guardiola would expect Torres to boast more assists next season with a forward of Griezmann’s quality at Manchester City. The Barcelona ace would also help extract even more from the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, with his versatile runs and desire for the ball.
