Liverpool set to recall Rhys Williams from Swansea amid Phillips interest

Liverpool are set to recall Rhys Williams from his loan spell at Swansea City, according to Neil Jones of Goal.com, as they prepare for the likely departure of Nathaniel Phillips this month.

Williams joined the Swans on a season-long loan at the start of the season, but having made only seven appearances for the Championship side in all competitions so far, he is expected to return to Anfield six months early. The presence of the 20-year-old centre-back in Liverpool’s ranks will make a potential departure of Phillips possible, with the Merseysiders extremely wary of stretching the squad too thin after what happened last season.

Liverpool have already rejected a proposal from Watford, who were interested in taking Phillips on loan for the rest of the season with an obligation to buy if they avoid relegation. The Reds want a permanent sale straight away, and their asking price of £15 million is non-negotiable.

Napoli and West Ham also considered moving for the 25-year-old, but both have since turned elsewhere. Burnley might be the next to step up their interest, with Newcastle reportedly considering their James Tarkowski.
