Leeds United: Joe Wainman reacts to Maxwel Cornet rumours

Leeds United fan Joe Wainman has been reacting to the latest rumours that have emerged about the club’s summer transfer business, with reports suggesting that they could be lining up a move for Olympique Lyonnais left-back Maxwel Cornet.

Reports have suggested that Leeds could be weighing up a move for the Ivory Coast international as they look to improve on the left-hand side of their defence.

Wainman, who admitted he didn’t know too much about the £10.8m-rated ace, has stressed that although he may be better than his would-be competition at Leeds in Ezgjan Alioski, he would like to see Leeds sign a natural left-back this summer.

Speaking on the Just Joe Football Show, Wainman had this to say about the emerging reports:

“I think the thing with Maxwel Cornet is, I want a specialised left-back. And what I mean by that is I want a left-back, who started his career as a left-back, has always played as a left-back, and that’s his only position.

“We already have a winger/left back in Ezgjan Alioski and I’m thinking we’re getting more of the same with Maxwel Cornet. Now, naturally, Maxwel Cornet is better than Alioski – he played for Lyon, he’s played at some good clubs and he’s played higher up the pitch.”

TIF Thoughts on Leeds going in for Maxwel Cornet…

Wainman makes a good point, there could be little point in bringing in a former winger to play left-back given that Leeds already have that in the shape of Alioski.

However, given how well it worked for Leeds and Bielsa last season, as Alioski contributed to five goals from left-back, bringing in a player who is seemingly more of a threat in the final third (with Cornet contributing to 10 goals in all competitions for Lyon) could potentially be a shrewd piece of business for Leeds if they’re able to get it done.

But if Leeds are looking to improve on last season’s 9th-place finish, then cutting down on some of the 54 goals they conceded will play a huge part. Therefore, signing a natural left-back who thinks about defending first could be the best option for Leeds to pursue this summer.
