Ahead of this summer’s European Championships, it has been confirmed by UEFA that teams will now be able to select 26 players instead of the original 23.
Do you think Bamford deserves an England call-up?
Relaying the news, Pope highlighted the possibility this may now present for the Leeds striker, Patrick Bamford, who was left out of Southgate’s last England squad.
Bamford has had an excellent season back in the top-flight with the 27-year-old scoring 14 goals on his return to the Premier League and with eight assists to his name, too (via Transfermarkt).
However, not all Leeds fans were as optimistic as Pope in his suggestion Bamford may now earn a spot in this summer’s England squad.
“Genuinely would not be gutted if none of our players were called up for their countries. They need a summer off. #LUFC“
“Needs to massively pick up his performances of late if this is to happen”
“Tbh since missing out on England he has looked very leggy and understandably so with th stole he plays that’s why we need another striker massively imo.”
“Having a laugh surely Adam? He’s fallen off the cliff just when he could have had a sniff”
“He’s not that good, he’s ok. Kane, DCL, Rashford, Watkins and Ings are all ahead of him, it’s unlikely we’ll take more than 5 strikers.”
“No!! Let him have a summer of rest. PLEASE”
“He’s not good enough”
“On current form no chance”
Ollie Watkins was chosen as Southgate’s third-choice striker for the World Cup Qualifiers, however, since those international games were played Bamford has failed to find the back of the net (via Transfermarkt).
Going by the reaction of these Leeds fans it is apparent they are not so sure Bamford has done enough in recent weeks to warrant a spot in the England squad, with some hoping he can have the summer off to benefit Leeds’ interests for next season.
