Leeds United journalist Conor McGilligan believes new defender Junior Firpo isn’t overlapping often enough.
While speaking about the club’s upcoming game against West Ham United in the Premier League, McGilligan spoke about the way Leeds can ‘exploit’ their opposition.
While discussing the player on the One Leeds Fan Channel, he claimed that Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen do not track back ‘effectively’ in their role as wingers.

He suggested that Firpo needs to attack that space better than he has done so far in a Leeds shirt, adding that this was how they got some joy against the Hammers when they played last term.
He explained: “Last season, with Benrahma and Bowen, you didn’t see them tracking back as effectively. And I think this is where Leeds were able to exploit them in some circumstances, in terms of when we’d have Jack Harrison and [Ezgjan] Alioski on the overlap.
“And I think these overlaps are so key with Leeds United, you’re not seeing it enough from Firpo, he needs to start doing it a lot more.”

Leeds currently sit 17th in the league table, so things clearly haven’t been going to plan for Marcelo Bielsa’s men.
Having signed from Barcelona in the summer for a reported £12.8m fee, Firpo has already featured regularly with his new club, and so must take some responsibility for their slow start to the campaign.
West Ham beat Leeds on both occasions when they met last season, so this could be a tricky game for the hosts. But, if McGilligan is right and the Hammers do have a weakness on their flanks, perhaps Firpo can be the man to exploit that vulnerability – although whether the journalist is on the same wavelength as Bielsa’s masterplan remains to be seen.
