BBC commentator Adam Pope has been speaking on the latest edition of The Athletic’s The Phil Hay Show about Tyler Roberts’ new deal.
The 22-year-old has had his contract extended until 2024 after he featured quite heavily in the second half of the season.
Roberts was linked with a loan move away from Elland Road in the January transfer window, but featured in 17 league games for the Whites from the end of January.
He also scored his first-ever Premier League goal in the penultimate game of the season and has been rewarded with a new deal, which Pope spent some time on.
He said: “It’s a big, big deal for Tyler, who has really come to prominence in Bielsa’s thinking towards the back-end of last season.
“I wouldn’t say it’s been the easiest of seasons for him, but he’s certainly been rewarded for the faith that Bielsa has shown in him, I would say.
“You’ve got to say, was his future in doubt at Leeds United? But Bielsa clearly wants him, and it’s a three-year deal, which is a huge leap of faith by Bielsa and Leeds United.”
Do you think Roberts deserved a new deal?
Yes, he did
No, we can do better
TIF Thoughts on Roberts…
Even when the Whites were in the Championship, there was talk that Bielsa rated Roberts very highly, but there were doubts over his ability to step up to the next level.
In the first half of the season, the Welsh international only played 266 minutes as Bielsa preferred other options.
However, he deserves credit for staying and forcing his way into the Argentine’s plans, and now he has a new deal to show for his efforts.
We hope that he continues to improve next year and has a strong season.
