Lanús climbed to second in Group B on Friday evening with a 4-2 win over Patronato at La Fortaleza.
A dull first 45 minutes burst to life in stoppage time when Dylan Gissi inadvertently blocked a José Sand shot with an arm allowing the veteran Lanús striker to slot in from the penalty spot at the second time of asking.
Much the better team Lanús doubled their lead when Tomás Belmonte headed in at a corner and Pedro De La Vega adding a third ten minutes from time sealed the victory.
Oliver Benítez heading a goal back for Patronato set up a potentially nervy ending only for Lucas Vera to restore the three-goal advantage. The cushion meant Lautaro Morales allowing Sebastián Sosa’s header to squirm through his hands for Patronato’s second went unpunished and Lanús secured the points.
Later in Santa Fe, Unión missed the chance to climb above Lanús into second after being held to a goalless draw by Sarmiento.
A game of few chances it wasn’t until late on that the home side will feel they could have snatched it. Juan García heading over when unmarked from eight yards before Imanol Machuca missing the target from close range.
Unión remain unbeaten in seven games but know that a goalless draw at home with Sarmiento represents two points dropped.
