Postgame Quotes
LA GALAXY HEAD COACH GREAT VANNEY:
On his thoughts on the game after having played 3 games so close together and winning two away games:
“I just thought it’s always going to be a tough game. The third game in seven days. Two of them on the road back to back, coming out of altitude, and then coming here and playing a man to man style on the third game which is always physically demanding. I was proud of the guys in terms of their movement and their work and how they created a number of chances. We could have finished a couple more which would have been nice. I know we gave up a couple but we also just showed how to compete with resiliency at the end and again three games in seven days is a tough ask.
I like that Javi gets two goals and that’s always good for everyone. I like that Sam and Kevin get assists both for him. Kevin is pressing really hard to get the goal and one of these will go in and it’s going to help with the confidence of just putting things in but I thought the effort was good. We dug down and we got some other guys on the field too. Some young guys who had to play in a tough environment so I am pleased with the guys and where they’re at and that they keep answering the games as they come.”
On finishing out the game:
“I thought the third goal was important and it came against the run of it. They had a couple chances. They hit the post and there were some things we had to deal with right in front of our goal. Bondi had to come up with a save here or there and then against the run but we got the third goal which was huge. I think that took a lot of pressure off the final stretch. We still gave one away like you said. That I did not like. I think sometimes in the box we’re giving a little too much space.”
On what he has learned about the team this week:
Some of the things that I know about them already is that they’re a tight group. Tey are ready to work for each other. They’ve been resilient in a lot of games and they’ve taken nine points on the road which is not easy to do in MLS and this one specifically in a tough week. So we have adapted, we’ve done some different things, and we’re still very much a work in progress but we keep getting results as we keep working through those kinks and those things that we want to get done.
On the play of Cabral and Grandsir:
“A lot of it for each of them is learning the league, learn the physicality of the league especially for Kevin and gaining confidence through the process and getting connected with their teammates and what we’re trying to do. Each one of them as managing their own things as they continue to adapt to this new a team and this new environment and they are living in. Sam just had a baby. He asked if he could stay this week on Saturday for this game and then he’s flying home to see his brand new baby after the game but he was going to leave after the last game but he wanted to stay and compete with the team for this game so these guys are committed. They’re learning. They’re learning more about the league and they’re going to continue to get better.”
On momentum:
“I would say our guys were frustrated that they did not get the result against a difficult Seattle team. They thought that we deserve something out of that game so they came back and wanted to answer that loss with great performance. We knew these two games were going to be very difficult but we also know how precious momentum is in this league and whenever you have hit a speed bump or get a loss or get a result that doesn’t go your way you have to respond right away and try to turn that around back in your favor and these guys have done that each time we have had a setback. They have responded excellently and have so again, as you mentioned, in two difficult games on the road and so there for us we keep focused on improving as a team. We are still a shell of where we’re going to go so while we’re competing to get results one at a time, we’re also trying to analyze the ways we can continue to get better as a group understanding that a 34 game season is a marathon but we are trying to win each of these matches along the way. That is where momentum helps. That is where getting results helps because it keeps everybody positive and it keeps people working and then we can really dig into some of the things we need to improve upon and these guys have been great with that.”
On Javier and the Mexican National Team:
“We will keep him here all day if they don’t have a use for him. He can stay in LA. He’s got a perfect home and we’re happy to have him. And we’ll will be good with it. And for him, I know he’s happy, he’s working hard and he’s scoring goals and he wants to keep that momentum going himself, so I know he is also just as happy to be here if this is where he’s going to be to continue to help our team win.”
LA GALAXY FORWARD JAVIER HERNÁNDEZ
On his relationship with Cabral and Grandsir:
You could see today was a great example about that because they both they both assisted. They both had big chances. They both need to adapt themselves to the culture, to the language, to the level of MLS.
On his emotional intelligence during the game:
“I scored a quite early goal in the first half and then second goal in the second half and then we maintain the position. We showed it today that we can have possessions and we can even kill some time with good possession. I think it was very well balance emotional game.”
