KEMAR ROOFE and Filip Helander have been left out of Rangers’ Champions League squad, it has emerged.
The Jamaica international has been sidelined with injury for the past few months and Gers knew he would miss the start of the season.
While Helander has been crocked for a substantial length of time, eventually being sent to see a specialist this summer after a further setback.
Tom Lawrence however – who will miss this weekend’s Old Firm match and at least the first two matches of the group phase – IS included in the final squad list.
The rest of the squad appears to pick itself with no major surprises.
Further details on Roofe’s injury status and the progress of his recovery have been sparse.
However, the fact he has been omitted from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad for the group stage matches of the Champions League could point to the fact he is still quite a while away from being ready to play for the Light Blues.
Roofe picked up an injury against Braga in the quarter-finals of the Europa League and missed the rest of the run to Seville until appearing as a late substitute in the final against Eintracht Frankfurt.
He was dealt another blow after picking up another knock in pre-season – leaving him watching the opening few fixtures of this campaign from the stands.
Roofe gave fans hope of a return sooner rather than later when he posted a picture of himself with his football boots back on his feet on August 23.
But it appears a full playing return is still a while away.
Swedish defender Helander missed the bulk of last season with a knee problem that required surgery and then picked up a foot injury just a few weeks after making a comeback.
The group stage matches of the Champions League run until November 2, with Rangers hosting Ajax the night before in their final game of the round.
Clubs due to compete in the competition were to submit their squad lists by 11pm BST on September 2.
UEFA’s website states: “Every club must submit two lists of players, including details such as shirt number, date of birth and nationality. List A needs to be submitted to the relevant association to be verified, validated and forwarded to UEFA by 24:00 CET on Friday 2 September. The same process applies to List B (more details below), which must be submitted no later than 24:00 CET the day before each match.”
