Kane not entirely to blame, as striker told Chelsea star he must be livid with

Alan Shearer feels that one England and Chelsea star has not helped Harry Kane’s lack of impact for the Three Lions at Euro 2020 so far.

Tottenham striker Kane came into the tournament off the back of one of his best campaigns in front of goal. Indeed, unlike in recent campaigns, he avoided a long-term injury. As such, he ended up scooping the Premier League’s season awards for most goals and most assists.

Such form saw him earn the label of one of the stars to watch at Euro 2020. However, he has struggled to have an impact in England’s first two games.

Shearer criticised Kane after the opening 1-0 win over Croatia. But on Friday, Kane came off after 74 minutes against Scotland, with Marcus Rashford replacing him.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate insisted that he wanted more “energy” in his team by bringing Rashford on. Nevertheless, the Spurs man faced further criticism from Roy Keane after Friday’s 0-0 draw.

According to Shearer’s latest assessment, though, Chelsea full-back Reece James – who replaced Kyle Walker against Scotland – did not help Kane out.

“A month ago he got the Golden Boot, but it’s just a reminder to Harry that he can’t keep coming short,” Shearer told BBC Sport on Saturday.

“You’ve got to offer the defenders other problems. In his defence it was far too negative last night.

“You’ve got to break the lines. The number of times I’ve seen Reece James whip a ball in, he doesn’t even think once about doing it.

“Harry Kane should be screaming at him to get that ball in. There’s no doubt Kane can play better and he will play better.

“Bobby Robson once said to me ‘do not keep coming towards the ball, offer other problems to the defender’. When the crosses aren’t coming in he has to tell them.”

England have likely sealed their place in the last 16, barring a goal difference swing if Croatia win big against Scotland on Tuesday and the Three Lions lose to the Czech Republic.

Kane faces club transfer dilemma

Amid the spotlight falling on him on the international stage, Kane will soon return to Tottenham and have a big decision to make.

He has been heavily linked with a mega-money move away from north London, while wanting to stay in the Premier League.

But if he does go, one pundit has claimed that another key Spurs star could follow him.
