It doesn’t get any easier for Sheffield United

If you thought it couldn’t get any more dreadful for a team laying at the very bottom of the Premier League standings, think again. Sheffield must now end the campaign without captain Billy Sharp.

Sheffield United’s season will be one they will want to be behind them as quickly as they can. Regelation certain, the departure of Chris Wilder, and now the untimely injury of Bill Sharp all in the same campaign.

The Blades have dropped off so badly they’ve gone from potential European competitors in 2019/20, to the team with the lowest number of wins and points in the follow-up campaign.

Billy Sharp will miss the ending to Sheffield United’s Premier League season

It is almost safe to say that Blades’ captain Billy Sharp has played his final Premier League game of his career.

The 35-year-old, as per the Athletic, will miss the last seven games of the season after undergoing surgery on a muscle problem that he sustained during the last period of their promising FA Cup run.

Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp will miss the rest of the season following an operation on a muscle injury.

Sharp, 35, has not featured in Sheffield United’s last three matches after sustaining the injury in the build-up to the FA Cup quarter-final defeat by Chelsea.

The injury sustained by the club’s top goalscorer was initially thought not to require him to go for an operation, hence why it has taken the club and Sharp about three weeks to make the decision to go under the knife.

Now there is no getting around it –  so the club will have to do without Billy’s sharpness in front of goal and will have to rely on the Blades top goalscorer this season, David McGoldrick and co.

Billy Sharp was a reliable bench player for FPL managers back in the days

Billy has always been a reliable source for Sheffield. Him being their second-highest goal contributor exhibits enough evidence of how important he is to the side, especially in this extremely difficult time.

Of the few goals United have scored for the season, 17 to be exact, Billy Sharp has contributed with three goals scored. Crazy to believe that the English side’s second-best league numbers are three goals.

Last season he had a return of 57 points, nine of them bonus points, in 1037 minutes played. He was a cheap option at the price of £6.0 that we could count on to chip in with the odd goal.

Billy Sharp on how “hurt” he is to miss the rest of the season:

Always gutting to miss games so to be ruled out for the remainder of the season hurts.

Sadly the injury was worse than I’d hoped but operation went well and will be back stronger next season to get my 250th goal in front of a packed Bramall Lane. (Via: theathletic.com)

The club captain joins long-term injury outfielders; Jack O’Connell, Sander Berge, Chris Basham and recently limped off, Oli McBurnie.

Next in line for Sheffield United?
  1. Wolves vs. Sheffield United
  2. Sheffield United vs. Brighton
  3. Tottenham vs. Sheffield United
  4. Sheffield United vs. Crystal Palace
  5. Everton vs. Sheffield United
  6. Newcastle vs. Sheffield United
  7. Sheffield United vs. Burnley

Up next for the Blades is a trip to Molineux Stadium on Saturday for a clash against Wolves. Hopefully, they can turn around their current form and end their final days in the EPL on a high note.

There are some winnable matchups in their final seven fixtures. Some of the teams they go up against, like them, have been on a massive decline.

Sheffield can have a say in the race for top-four and can play a part in who goes down to the EFL Championship with them. This gives them loads to play for.
