Inter Miami CF to Host Toronto FC on Saturday in First Meeting Between the Sides in 2022

Inter Miami CF (9W-10L-6D, 33 points) will look to build on its momentum at DRV PNK Stadium this Saturday, Aug. 20 at 8 p.m. ET when it hosts Toronto FC (8W-12L-6D, 30 points).

Brightline – GOOOL Getter Trains

Brightline, the only provider of modern, eco-friendly, intercity rail in America, partnered with the club to offer dedicated game day trains along with free shuttles for the 2022 Inter Miami CF season.

With a total of six GOOOL Getter trains per game to choose from, fans won’t get caught offside on game day. The first GOOOL Getter train will arrive at Fort Lauderdale approximately two hours before kickoff, the second train will arrive approximately one hour before and the third train will arrive just in time for kickoff.

Due to high demand, fans are encouraged to book tickets ahead of game day and check Brightline’s website for train times and prices.

Aiming to Extend Positive Streak

Inter Miami will continue with MLS regular action facing Toronto FC on Saturday amidst a four-match unbeaten run and a strong home stretch of just one loss in the team’s last 11 outings at DRV PNK Stadium.

Past Match

Inter Miami will enter the weekend’s fixture after a crucial 3-2 home win in its last match when it took on New York City FC on Saturday, Aug. 13. Midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo and winger Ariel Lassiter scored the team’s goals in the matchup to help the Herons clinch the three points. His two goal’s in the match were Pozuelo’s first two as an Inter Miami player, while Lassiter’s was his second in the 2022 MLS regular season.

MLS Player of the Week and Team of the Week Honors for Pozuelo

Pozuelo was voted MLS Player of the Week and to the Team of the Week for Week 25 of the 2022 regular season following his match-winning performance against NYCFC. The Spaniard netted his first two Inter Miami goals and registered an assist in the match. This makes Inter Miami the first club to earn three MLS Player of the Week designations this season (Leonardo Campana in Week 6, Gonzalo Higuaín in Week 23).

First 2022 Matchup Against Toronto

Saturday will see Inter Miami and Toronto face each other for the first time in 2022 and fifth time in club history, with an overall record of three wins and a loss for the team to date. The last time both sides clashed was on Oct. 20, 2021, with Inter Miami earning a convincing 3-0 win at DRV PNK Stadium.

Familiar Faces

The first meeting between in 2022 between Inter Miami and Toronto may present reunions for several former teammates and known rivals. Inter Miami striker Gonzalo Higuaín may face former teammate and known rivals Lorenzo Insigne, Federico Bernardeschi and Domenico Criscito: Higuaín and Insigne played 103 matches together for SSC Napoli between 2013 and 2016 and subsequently faced each other 11 times after Higuaín moved to Juventus F.C.; Higuaín and Bernasdeschi shared the pitch 52 times during Higuaín’s Juventus stint, while also matching up against each five times while representing different Italian clubs; Higuaín and Criscito have previously played against each other once while Higuaín was at A.C. Milan and Criscito at Genoa CFC.

Attacker Corentin Jean may also face a former teammate and familiar opponent, as he played 20 matches alongside Toronto’s Chris Mavinga between 2015 and 2016 during his ESTAC Troyes days, and later on clashed against him twice in Ligue 1 action while still playing for Troyes when Mavinga was a Stade Rennais FC player. Additionally, DeAndre Yedlin and Brek Shea may face former USMNT teammate Michael Bradley, while midfielder Bryce Duke my meet up with former coach Bob Bradley, who coached him during his time at LAFC.

Finally, Pozuelo may face his former side after playing for Toronto FC from 2019 up to this summer before joining Inter Miami.

Scouting Toronto FC

Toronto FC, meanwhile, comes into the weekend’s matchup after a 2-2 draw at home against the New England Revolution in their last game on Aug.17. So far in 2022, the Canadian side has recorded eight wins, 12 losses and six draws, with midfielder Jonathan Osorio leading the team with six goals and nine assists. Additionally, Bernardeschi and Insigne have been in fine form since joining the team this summer, with the Italian pair registering four goals and two assists, and two goals and one assist respectively.
