Ian Wright calls out ‘shameful’ Arsenal over Super League plans

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has called out the Gunners for becoming founder members of the European Super League in a video he posted on Twitter.

Twelve clubs, including Arsenal, made the bombshell announcement on Sunday that they intend to break away and form their own competition. Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham have also signed up. Indeed, the big three in Spain and Italy make up the 12 “founding” members.

The new league has sparked uproar across the football world, with Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville both launching into the owners of Liverpool and United respectively.

And Wright is equally unhappy with events at the Emirates.

“I literally can’t believe it when I saw Arsenal’s name come up on the screen as one of the teams,” he said.

“This is the same Arsenal that only a couple of weeks ago was commended for the tribute to David Rocastle.

“God, the man would be turning in his grave knowing what is going on now. Is this how far we have fallen?

“That we are getting into competitions because we are not good enough to get into them, so at the detriment of the English game we are getting the seat to the table we have no right to be at.”

Players left in limbo

“It is shameful,” added Wright.

“If I am a player now I am worried that if I play in this competition I can’t play in the Euros, the World Cup. They are saying the teams in the semi-finals now may get disqualified because of all of this.

“Are we supposed to play against these great teams on a weekly basis, I played against AC Milan twice in my career and it is something I will never forget.

“You dream of playing in the Champions League and the World Cup, you dream of playing in the Euros for your country.

“How do you feel as as player right now, I would be absolutely s******g myself right now if I was a player.”
