Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has been handed a huge boost ahead of the upcoming season, with club captain Cesar Azpilicueta set to sign a new deal.
As reported by Gerard Moreno, the Spaniard is set to stay with the Blues and sign a contract that will tie him down for two more years.
Azpilicueta had looked almost certain to be on his way to his homeland to join Barcelona, however Moreno claims that the defender has instead told the La Liga side that he will be staying put.
The report claims that negotiations between the two clubs had been ongoing for several weeks and Azpilicueta eventually decided against the move as he was adamant that his future would be decided before the Premier League season kicks off on Friday.
The Blues get their campaign underway with a trip to Goodison Park to face Everton on Saturday, and their captain could be in line to make his 475th appearance for the club.
Former Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has already joined Barcelona following the expiry of his Blues deal, and left-back Marcos Alonso still looks likely to follow in his former teammate’s footsteps and move to the Nou Camp.
