HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC midfielder Darwin Cerén was named to the El Salvador National Team for a pair of 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the Salvadoran Football Federation announced over the weekend.
El Salvador will face the U.S. Virgin Islands on June 5 and host Antigua and Barbuda on June 8. El Salvador are currently tied with Antigua and Barbados for the top spot in Group A with four points. The first place team from each group will advance to the second round to face the winner of Group F.
Cerén has appeared in five games for the Dynamo this season and crossed the 10,000 minute mark in MLS on May 12 in Houston’s 1-1 draw with FC Dallas. This is Cerén’s fourth season with the Dynamo and the midfielder has appeared in 62 games for Houston.
Internationally, the midfielder has earned 59 appearances for El Salvador and this is the first national team callup for Cerén this year. The Quezaltepeque, El Salvador native earned his last cap against the United States on Dec. 12, 2020.
