Group F – Germany vs Hungary – Sport Grill

Germany meet Hungary in their final Group F match of Euro 2020 at Allianz Arena, Munich as both teams look to advance to the knockout stages.

At least one point would see Germany qualify in third place at minimum, whereas Hungary must win to stand any chance of advancing to the Last 16.

Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller are doubts for Germany with knee injuries but manager, Joachim Low otherwise have no fresh injury concerns to report.

Hungary could be without Adam Szalai after the striker was substituted with suspected concussion during Saturday’s draw against France.

Stat Attack

  • This is Germany’s first clash against Hungary at the Euros, although they have previously met twice at World Cup where both teams won one game apiece.
  • Germany have lost just one of their last six matches against Hungary (W3, D2, L1).
  • Hungary have won just two of 12 away games against Germany (W2, D3, L7).
  • No Hungary player has created more dribbles than the 11 dribbles produced by Roland Sallai in their opening two matches.
  • Germany have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five matches in all competitions (W2, D1, L2).

Prediction

Having produced a wasteful opening performance last week against France, Germany certainly turned their fortunes around on Saturday with a ruthless yet clinical display against Portugal so will certainly fancy their chances here if can minimise the impact of Hummels and Muller’s potential absences.

Hungary meanwhile have proven difficult for teams to brake down and if they come here with a super-tight defence, I do wonder if they might be able to get something on the counter-attack if Germany regress backwards to their opening performance.

This though feels like Germany’s game to lose but the opening goal will be important because if Hungary score first, I can just see them sitting deep like France did and forcing Germany to raise their work rate and creativity.

I however am going for a Germany win because home advantage will be important and for them to lose after Saturday’s performance would be embarrassing.

Prediction: Germany 2-1 Hungary
